Heya folks, my name is Ian, and for the last ten years, I’ve been bouncing back and forth between the worlds of art and technology, trying to make them play nice together. As a musician, I’ve performed electro-acoustic music ranging from simple tape tracks to live improvisation with machine learning. As a software developer, I’ve worked on the control of audio/video systems in boardrooms, theaters, and luxury superyachts. In my mind, software development is like any other tool in a creator’s toolbox: for certain tasks, it is the cleanest, most elegant solution, while for others it is better to choose another approach (which can easily be a human solution as a piece of hardware). As a Group Advisor, my first responsibility is to solve the client’s problem, using all of the tools at my disposal.
Personal Brand: I believe that all decisions are, on some level, aesthetic ones. Before we can say that a thing is beautiful, or true, or useful, we must first choose what properties we are going to value. This is just as true of software development as it is of art. What that means in a professional context is that step one of any project is to make sure that everyone involved has a working understanding of each others’ values. Only then can we work together to solve problems for each other.
